Your Sacroiliac (SI) Joint is located where your tailbone (sacrum) joins your hip bone. The joint is kept together by a whole host of tight ligaments. Over time, it’s normal that these ligaments become loosened as a result of several factors… movement repetition, pregnancy, accidents… even bad posture can contribute to loosening these ligaments. It can be quite painful, especially in your lower back, as this happens.
What to Do to Treat Pain Due to Your SI Joint
There are several things you can do to help take the pressure off your SI joint. Practicing good posture and body movement goes a long way towards helping stress in this area. Be careful not to put all your weight on one leg or to sit with all your weight on one hip. Bend with your knees and not at the waist to pick things up. Take it easy on the stairs and sharp inclines if you are having pain.
Your physician may instruct you to use heat and/or ice to treat pain. The doctor may also suggest that you wear a sacroiliac belt, which will support the lower back and help with hip and back pain.
Does Physical Therapy Help Your SI Joint?
This may be the most essential activity you can do if you’re having issues with your SI joint. A physical therapist can make all the difference in your treatment. Pain and pressure on the SI joint are typically treated with manual therapy, also called joint mobilization. This is, of course, after proper diagnosis is made. This technique should only be performed by someone that is licensed to perform it. At Kinetic PT, we are pleased to offer this treatment to those suffering from SI joint issues.
There are many exercises when done correctly, that can bring you substantial relief. These should be done under the care of a physical therapist. If you’re doing the wrong exercises or doing the proper exercises the wrong way, you can aggravate the SI joint and make the problem worse.
